Special Celebration Hikoi

Dear Whanau (family) participants of the 2011 Hikoi Wairua. This is an update and follows up on the previous news letter.

Shortly you will be arriving into Aoteroa to begin your sacred walk (hikoi)

We have been very busy working with all the planning of the hikoi as well as learning about trust in divine guidance. We have had to change some parts of our journey but it’s all looking good.

What are the most important things to remember on your hikoi wairua (sacred walk) First you have come from the other side of the world. The journey is long and your chi turns upside down. The good news is you will start to walk in the energies of the southern hemisphere. You really need to give yourself time to stop flying and reconnect then you will really start to enjoy your personal hikoi as well as bonding and meeting new friends you will also re-meeting old friends.

Some of you would already have left your country and taking everything at a slower pace.

customs

Lida Duijn and Lida Vriend my assistants from Holland have met up with the Dutch whanau and informed them of some aspects of travelling and been hosted by our Indigenous people of NZ “Maori.” Aunty Wai,s people.

Orna was going to inform Whare Wananga the long-term study program. Mana Aroha have been here and Aniwaniwa so you can have some idea of our culture and our lore.

For those who have never been to NZ and have never taken part in our formal ceremonies and rituals then you are in for a new experience at first it could feel different but it won’t take you long and it will seem very natural.

What you need to be prepared for.

Money. Koha

You don’t have to travel with a lot of Euros we have good banks and you can ask the Bank teller to change your euros when you want at no xtra cost. Or you can use your credit cards .There will be some buys you may like to make so I would recommend that you are prepared to have available up to 200 Euros. for such situations. this also includes koha to the marae we visit. Before we go onto a marae Matua Charlie or Matua Moetatua our Kaumatua will be given an envelope which all of us would put a koha into and when they finish making their koreroa (formal speech) they will step forward and lay the koha on the ground. The home people will acknowledge this koha by picking it up.

This type of koha is given with intention and good will to help that marae feed the people or help then take care of their manuhiri (visitors)No specific amount is asked for just give with your heart.

This can happen several times over the next 15 days.

One koha that all german speaking participants will be asked to support. Angelika Dawson my translator is not paid to translate on this hikoi please show your appreciation by making a one off koha (once only)to an appointed assistant who will record your koha in the normal Way.

All my past and present students are aware what a koha is. The first day is orientation day where our elders will talk about our rituals, respect ,We will keep you informed over the 16 days.

Please check out your check list: Do you have a comprehensive insurance?

Please don’t think about coming with out insurance. dont take chances. Come prepared for all weathers. World wide we cannot predict what the weather will be like. Come to enjoy. Leave your expectation at home be free. The food will be great we have two great chefs. Bernadette is our magic chef and will be assisted by Busho. We have two marae stays with all the rituals. Please do not bring drums made out of animal skins. No feathers our customs department at the airport are worse than Australia. Don’t forget your pink card. You are visiting aunty Wai 7 Atmore avenue. Visit friends and on holiday. Please go to capital house and leave your luggage there. Klaus and Lida will take you to The lodge Shelly Bay. We will have our first formal welcome so woman wear a skirt covering your knees. You will not be able to go to the toilet until after the ceremony. Please email me or sabrina if you have questions.
