Hikoi Wairua (Sacred Walk) 2009

This years theme for 2009

Te Whare Tapa Wha
Te taha wairua, te taha tinana, te taha hinengaro, te taha whanau

The Maori world view likenes a person to a spiritual house with four sides:
the spiritual side, the physical side, the mind and the family relationship.
Your Hikoi will offer many opportunities to explore the four cornerstones to your life.

Tuesday 17 February - Tuesday 03 march

Day one 17th Feb Tuesday

The Hikoi begins at Holdens Bay Top10 Rotorua
holiday Park conference centre, 5-7 Stonebridge Park Drive, Holdens Bay Rotorua (this is very close to Rotorua airport)a taxi can pick up and deliver (http://www.holdensbay.co.nz).

Please make sure your arrival is no later than the 17th February. We officially begin the Hikoi Wairua (sacred Walk) at lunch time 1:30 pm sharing our first meal in the conference room of Top10. Everyone is to help wash dishes and clear after lunch as well as set up the conference room where a formal welcome is to take place by Moetatua ( Kaumatua/elder) and Te Waimatao (Matakite).

Your hosts: TeWaimatao Turoa (Matakite / spiritual leader) and Moetatua Turoa (Kaumatua / elder, authority on Maori protocol and tribal history). Our Hikoi Kuia is aunty Mei Thompson, eldest sister of Te Waimatao and Moetatua.

Tribal area: Rotorua is central to the eight Iwi that make up the confederation of tribes known as Te Arawa. Te Whanau-a-Apanui, one of the 5 main tribes Waimatao and Moetatua affiliate to, has strong whakapapa-links (genealogy) to Te Arawa. More closely however, our grandfathers sister Hannah née Park, married the first Maori bishop of Aotearoa, a Te Arawa rangatira (leader), Frederick Bennet. Should you visit the lovely church of Ohinemutu you may chance upon her grave. Our mother's family donated the stain glass windows in that church.

Introduction time. Hikoi Wairua 2009 is privileged to be supported by a team of extraordinarily talented people in their own right. On this Hikoi they will take up roles such as: ringawera (cook), kaimahi (worker), kaiawhina (assistant), kaiako (teacher) and drivers. Some among the skills they bring include:

  • experts in food preparation
  • healing
  • Rongoa (knowledge of medicine and medicine plants)
  • Whakairo (Maori carving)
  • Music, songs, dance and many others that you will discover on your Hikoi
Team introduces themselves.
A general outline of the journey is to be presented. It includes travel arrangements and an introduction to Tikanga (traditions, protocols) as well as a question - answer session.
Participants introduce themselves.
Free time until dinner which will be served at 7:30 pm.
Evening free, catch up on your chi, sleep is necessary as you are from the other side of the world, jet lag may visit you at this time.

Karakia to bless our Journey to Tauranga and Waimana/Whakatane
Your first Powhiri (formal welcome) onto Marae
Marae Stay Waimana

Noho Marae ki Waimana

Waimana is located between Whakatane and Opotiki. The people are from Tuhoe tribe. These people are steeped in Tikanga Maori (Maori culture) and for most of them Maori is their first language. On this occasion we will all be Manuhiri (visitors) and Waewae tapu ( sacred feet) - it means first time visitors. The status Waewae tapu makes this group very special. I expect that much of the Powhiri ceremony will reflect that. A lot of home work needs to be done by your hosts in order that the hikoi as a whole understands the Kawa (protocols) followed by the people of this tribe so that the whole experience is memorable and enjoyable. Once we are on the marae, the Tangata whenua will take the lead. I am sure they will share the best that they have with us.

Day five 21th Feb Saturday

Morning Karakia and meditation taken by our hosts. Many Tuhoe marae follow the Ringatu faith, the Kaumatua will give explanation about that faith prior to going to Waimana. Important to know, if Ringatu faith is been followed, Karakia starts very early in the morning.

Poroporoaki: (traditional farewell)
The Poroporoaki is the last ceremony performed on a Noho marae. It is initiated by the visitors. It is an opportunity to let the Tangata whenua know how much you have appreciated their hospitality. Once the ceremony is over, we will leave the marae. People must insure that all luggage is loaded on the bus before the Poroporoaki begins.

Travel to Pahaoa Marae (within the tribe of Te Whanau-a-Apanui ) Lunch break and short comfort breaks on our journey.

Powhiri at 5pm
Pahaoa Marae sits beside the sea, it is so named because of the sound the sea makes as it passes the rocks and brakes onto the shore. The mouth of the Kereu River is favored to wash the salt of your body after bathing in the sea. Pahaoa is our spiritual home, it houses photos of our ancestors and their stories are written in the Kowhaiwhai patterns inside the whare tupuna (ancestral house). The name of the hapu (subtribe) is Kahuratao, named after an ancestor common to all the Tangata whenua including Te Waimatao and Moetatua.

Day six 22th Feb Sunday

Morning meditation (physical) taken by Barbara or heart meditation with music.

Wisdom Teaching
Presenters may be invited from within the resources of the Tangata whenua or from our traveling experts.

Te rohe (tribal area) of Te Whanau-a-Apanui is a long narrow strip of land that follows a spectacular coast line eastwards for approximately 100 kilometers, beginning at Haawai and ending at a place called Potaka. The horizon is dominated by an active volcano on an island 40 km off shore known by Maori as Whakaari (non Maori White Island.) The road meanders up hill and down dale often looking straight down into the sea (Hine Moana) who's color changes with her mood. There are many rivers and streams that tumble from the Te Raukumara ranges which rise quickly from the sea. Enjoy the hospitality our extended whanau offers, the beaches, our waterfall, Whanarua Bay, the spiritual energy and the sub tropical climate.

An ideal environment for group work, and planning in preparation for the healing day .

Atarangi Muru's roopu are to arrive this day. When they do they will be accorded a powhiri. This will give you the opportunity to experience being on the tangata whenua side at the Powhiri.

Day eight 24th Feb Tuesday

Open day healing, day 2.

will be shared with our healers from Atarangi Muru and her roopu.
Activities: healings will be offered to our extended whanau. The day will close with a Hakari (feast) and all the trimmings. To make it work a hangi work shop has to run concurrently with the activities of the healing day. This workshop will allow participants a hands on experience in cooking food in an earth oven and a chance to contribute to a traditional hakari. The hangi workshop promises to be loads of work and lots of fun. There will be concert to follow just to add that extra unforgettable something to the evening.

The Wanganui river is the only river in the north island of Aotearoa, owned by a single tribe, Te Haunui-a-Paparangi.

Ko Ruapehu te Maunga, ko Wanganui te Awa,
ko Te Haunui-a-Paparangi te Iwi, ko Turoa te Tangata.

The above proverb is the ancient way of describing ownership over the mountain, rivers and land of the Wanganui people. It translates as follows: Ruapehu is the mountain, Wanganui is the river, Te Haunui-a-Paparangi is the tribe and Turoa is the man. We, the descendents of Turoa wish to share with you a special Wairua (spirituality) that flows around this region and to share the hospitality of Ngati Ruaka (Tribe) at Ranana Marae.

Day thirteen March 1st Sunday

Morning meditation Karakia

Ko au Te Awa Te Awa Ko au
I am the river the river is me

A canoe excursion is planned to travel down a very special section of our river under the guidance of Michael Poa of the enterprise One River, Many Journeys. A verse from a song often sung on this river is: Pokarekare ana nga wai o Wanganui, korikori ana te mauri tipua, tika rere mai ki Wanganui e.

This means: when the water is turbulent at the sides, the life force of the river is dancing. So it is best to paddle down the centre of the river. The proverb together with the words of the song sum up the spiritual influence the river has over the people of Wanganui. We wish to share this with you.
